Sikkim: Gangtok Traffic Police to Adopt Body Cameras for Improved Accountability and Public Relations
Gangtok, September 28, 2024 — In a bid to enhance accountability and improve public relations, the Gangtok traffic police force is set to equip its officers with body cameras, according to an announcement made by Superintendent of Police (SP) Tenzing Loden Lepcha during a press conference on September 27. This initiative comes in response to growing public concerns over the behavior of some traffic officers.
Addressing these concerns, SP Lepcha acknowledged the “unpleasant” conduct reported by citizens and emphasized the need for traffic police to adopt better communication skills. “We are aware of the public’s concerns regarding the conduct of certain officers, and we are taking measures to address this,” he stated, pointing out that while officers often operate under high-pressure directives, it does not justify inappropriate or discourteous interactions with the public.
As part of the effort to promote professionalism, 12 body cameras have already been acquired for traffic officers on motorcycles. These devices will soon be incorporated into their uniforms, recording interactions during traffic stops to ensure transparency. SP Lepcha noted that the department plans to equip all 120 traffic officers with body cameras by the end of the year.
The introduction of body cameras aims to foster a balance between maintaining authority and providing respectful service to the public. “We want our officers to remain firm and strict but also to treat the public with respect,” said Lepcha, expressing confidence that this initiative will lead to significant improvements in the behavior of traffic personnel, creating a more positive and professional environment for residents and visitors alike.
