Sikkim Government Appoints Block Development Officers as Executive Magistrates

Northeast Desk, 30th August: In a significant administrative move, the Sikkim government has appointed all Block Development Officers (BDOs) across the state to also serve as Executive Magistrates. This dual role, as outlined in an official notification issued on August 22, empowers BDOs to carry out specific judicial and administrative functions traditionally reserved for magistrates.

Under this new directive, BDOs will now have the authority to administer oaths or affirmations of affidavits in accordance with Section 333 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Additionally, they will be responsible for issuing various certificates, including those for backward class status, income, property, and no landed property.

The notification further specifies that these newly designated Executive Magistrates will operate under the supervision and direction of the District Magistrate and other legal authorities as required. This measure is expected to streamline administrative processes and enhance the efficiency of public services at the grassroots level in Sikkim.
