Sikkim Government Rolls Out Free Bus Rides for Disabled and Needy Women

Northeast Desk, 12th September: In a move aimed at promoting inclusivity and social welfare, the Sikkim government has announced a groundbreaking initiative offering free bus travel to persons with disabilities and women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This concession is applicable on both intra-state and inter-state bus services, effective immediately.

According to an official notification released by the state transport department, individuals with over 40% disability can avail of this facility by producing a valid Unique Disability ID card issued by the Central government. Similarly, women belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category can enjoy free bus rides by furnishing a BPL certificate issued by the Directorate of Economics, Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation (DESME).

This pioneering move is expected to significantly improve the mobility and accessibility of marginalized communities in Sikkim, enabling them to travel with greater ease and independence.
