Sikkim Governor Chairs Namgyal Institute of Tibetology’s Executive Board and General Council Meeting
Gangtok: The Executive Board and General Council meeting of the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (NIT) was held at Raj Bhavan in Sikkim on February 11.
Chaired by Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, who also serves as the President of NIT, the meeting brought together several senior officials, including the Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Governor, Jitendra Singh Raje, and secretaries from the Culture, Higher Education, and other relevant departments.
During the meeting, Governor Mathur underscored the vital role of NIT as a premier institution for Tibetan and Buddhist studies. He stressed the importance of strengthening its academic framework by introducing new academic positions, such as Assistant Professors, in accordance with UGC guidelines. He instructed the Finance Committee to investigate avenues for establishing these positions.
A significant topic of discussion was the upcoming 30-bedded Sowa Rigpa Hospital at the NIT campus. The Governor urged the board to expedite the appointment process for hospital staff to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
Prior to the deliberations, NIT Director Dr. Passang D. Phempu delivered the welcome address, expressing gratitude to the Governor for his continued guidance and presenting a comprehensive institutional report. The meeting also encompassed a review of various ongoing and forthcoming initiatives aimed at enhancing NIT’s academic and research standing.
