Sikkim Governor Reviews Singtam Flood Preparedness Amidst Rising Water Levels

Singtam, Sikkim: With incessant rainfall continuing to swell rivers, Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur on Tuesday undertook a spot assessment of the Indreni Bridge in Singtam, reviewing the state’s proactive measures against potential flooding. The visit underscores growing concerns for low-lying areas as water levels inch upwards.

Governor Mathur, accompanied by Commissioner-cum-Secretary Jitendra Singh Raje and other Raj Bhavan officials, engaged with Singtam Nagar Panchayat members, local authorities, and residents. This direct interaction aimed to gather first-hand information on the ground realities and the community’s immediate concerns regarding the increasing river flow.

While the situation is not yet critical, the consistent rise in water levels has prompted authorities to activate precautionary protocols. Officials have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance and ensure all necessary preparations are in place to address any emergent situations.

“Our paramount focus must be on preparedness,” Governor Mathur emphasised to officials present. He further stressed that “early action and robust public awareness are absolutely crucial to prevent any untoward incidents or loss.”

The Governor also highlighted the critical importance of seamless inter-departmental coordination throughout the monsoon season. He urged local agencies to rigorously monitor the evolving situation. Additionally, residents residing in vulnerable zones have been advised to adhere strictly to official advisories and exercise utmost caution during this period.
