Sikkim Hosts Comprehensive 16-Day A-HELP Training Programme for Pashusakhis

Northeast, August 18, 2024 — In a significant step towards advancing animal husbandry practices in Sikkim, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, successfully concluded a 16-day A-HELP training programme for Pashusakhis. This initiative, held from July 31 to August 16, 2024, at the Sokeythang Training Centre, was organized in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Animal Husbandry Department of Sikkim.

The training aimed to create a certified network of A-HELPs (Accredited Helpers in Livestock Production) who will serve as a crucial link between veterinary officers and livestock farmers across the state. Twenty-five Pashusakhis from the Sikkim Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM) participated in the immersive programme, which included a combination of orientation sessions, practical demonstrations, and hands-on experience in animal handling, housing, and ration balancing.

Participants also visited key establishments such as the Gaushala at Mamring, the Singhari Goat Conservation Farm, and the Sikkim Milk Union, gaining valuable insights into effective animal husbandry practices.

The training programme concluded with a valedictory ceremony on August 17, graced by prominent dignitaries including Dr. Sharman Rai, Project Director cum Secretary of AH&VS; Dr. Anand Thapa, Principal Director; and other high-level officials from the Animal Husbandry Department, SRLM, and NDDB Anand Gujarat.

This initiative is expected to significantly impact the animal husbandry sector in Sikkim by empowering Pashusakhis to play a vital role in enhancing the health and welfare of livestock and poultry, while promoting sustainable and supportive animal husbandry practices across the state.
