Sikkim: IMD Predicts Significant Temperature Drop and Rainfall in Gangtok

Gangtok: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a sharp dip in temperatures and rainfall for Gangtok, Sikkim, in the first week of January 2025.
• Current Weather Conditions:
Night temperatures in Gangtok have already dropped to 6°C, while daytime highs are at 8°C, significantly colder than previous years.
• Rainfall Predictions:
IMD Gangtok head, Gopinath Raha, stated that light to moderate rainfall is expected on January 7 and 8 due to snowfall in North Sikkim, which has intensified the chill statewide.
• Record Cold Winter:
Sikkim is experiencing its coldest winter since 2019, with Gangtok witnessing a historic 24-day dry spell from December 8 to 31.
• Future Weather Outlook:
Western disturbances could bring more snowfall and rain in the coming weeks, potentially driving temperatures lower.
• 2024 Weather Extremes:
While the region is now enduring record low temperatures, June 2024 marked the wettest month in years, with a 66% increase in rainfall compared to the average.

Residents are advised to prepare for harsher winter conditions as the cold intensifies in the coming days.
