Sikkim: Independence Day Celebrations, Special Tours and Environmental Initiatives
Northeast Desk, August 14 — In honor of the 78th Independence Day, Sikkim witnessed a series of notable events aimed at inclusivity and environmental awareness.
In Pakyong, Agawane Rohan Ramesh, IAS, District Collector of Pakyong, launched a special tour for persons with disabilities as part of the Tiranga Yatra. Organized by the Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRC-Sikkim), the tour featured visits to prominent landmarks such as Ranka Monastery and Saramsa Garden. The event saw participation from 35 students, 4 special educators, and officials from CRC Sikkim and the Sikkim Education Society. Sangay Gyasto Bhutia, ADC Pakyong, and Narayan Mishra, Joint Director of the Education Department, were also present.
In a parallel initiative, the 758 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) of Project Swastik spearheaded an extensive plantation drive under the theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.” The drive, which took place along Jawaharlal Nehru Marg (JNM), saw the planting of over 300 trees. Local councillor Miss Chungkela Lepcha joined the efforts, encouraging residents to contribute to a greener planet.
Earlier, on August 12, the 758 BRTF organized a painting competition for students and teachers at the Government Secondary School, focusing on environmental themes. More than 250 participants engaged in the event, with winners receiving awards for their creative contributions.
These events reflect a commitment to inclusivity and environmental stewardship, marking the Independence Day with meaningful and impactful activities.
