Sikkim: Indian Army and BRO Construct Bailey Bridge over Teesra River
Northeast Desk, 16th November: In a remarkable display of joint efforts, troops from Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army, along with assistance from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), have successfully completed the construction of a Bailey bridge over the Teesta River at Chungthang. This significant achievement reconnects the flood-affected areas of North Sikkim with the mainland, reestablishing vital transportation links that were severed on the night of October 3, 2023.
The 200-foot Bailey bridge, considered an engineering marvel, stands as the longest and heaviest single-span Bailey bridge that can be launched. The swift construction of this bridge, achieved through continuous round-the-clock efforts, is expected to facilitate seamless vehicle movement and the efficient delivery of relief materials to the previously isolated flood-affected regions.
The construction process involved the initial creation of concrete abutments by the BRO, followed by the construction of the bridge by the Trishakti Sappers, a task completed in approximately five days. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Mr. Samdup Lepcha, Honourable Minister of Roads and Bridges, Government of Sikkim, alongside officials from the Indian Army, BRO, and Civil Administration.
The collaborative efforts of the Engineer Troops of Trishakti Corps and the BRO, along with the utilization of heavy Earth Moving plants, highlight the commitment of the Indian Army to nation-building and its unwavering support for the people during times of crisis. The completion of this vital bridge underscores the resilience and resourcefulness of the armed forces in serving the nation.
