Sikkim: Indian Army Develops Advanced Flood Monitoring System to Mitigate Future Disasters

Sikkim: The Indian Army’s Eastern Command has unveiled an innovative solution to combat the threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

In response to the devastating GLOF that ravaged Sikkim’s Teesta River region last October, the Army’s Trishakti Sappers have developed an Advanced Flood Monitoring System (AFMS). This groundbreaking technology has recently earned national recognition at the prestigious Inno Yodha competition.

The AFMS, spearheaded by Hav Suresh PK of the Engineer Regiment, is designed to provide real-time water level monitoring and issue timely SMS alerts to enable swift evacuation and disaster response. By utilizing a combination of advanced technologies, including a microcontroller, UV sensor, GSM module, and the SONAR principle, the system ensures accurate and timely warnings.

This remarkable achievement underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to leveraging technology to safeguard communities and troops in disaster-prone regions like Sikkim. The AFMS serves as a testament to the Army’s dedication to disaster preparedness and response, offering hope and resilience to those affected by such catastrophic events.
