Northeast Desk, 19th February: In anticipation of the upcoming 2024 state assembly elections, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang marked a significant milestone by laying the foundation stone for the Lhatsun Chenpo Centre at Simik Lingzey, within the Singtam Khamdong constituency. The event witnessed the esteemed presence of 12th Chamgon Kenting Tai Situ Rinpoche and 10th Kyabje Tinkey Gonjang Rinpoche.
Addressing the gathering, Minister for Rural Development and Ecclesiastical Department, Sonam Lama, emphasized the paramount importance and urgency of establishing the Lhatsun Chenpo statue in Sikkim. He hailed it as a pivotal initiative guided by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. Lama outlined the scope of the project, revealing plans for a comprehensive 100-crore endeavor encompassing three distinct projects: the Gyalwa Lhatsun Chenpo project, the Phuntsog Namgyal project, and another venture in a separate village.
With the esteemed presence and blessings of Tai Situ Rinpoche, who conducted the Bhumi Pujan ceremony, Lama expressed optimism about the center’s profound impact on Sikkim’s spiritual landscape and tourism sector. He envisaged a notable increase in tourist footfall from both domestic and international visitors, particularly within the Khamdong–Singtam Assembly constituency, fostering opportunities for economic development and cultural exchange.
The Gyalwa Lhatsun Chenpo Centre, spanning 7.92 acres with an estimated cost of Rs 43.59 crore, stands as a testament to Sikkim’s steadfast commitment to preserving its rich Buddhist heritage. Phase I of the project will witness the construction of a dedicated center for Buddhism and Buddhist craftsmanship, alongside the imposing 50-foot statue of Lhatsun Khempo. Additionally, the project aims to replicate four sacred caves within Sikkim, further enhancing its spiritual allure and cultural significance.
