Sikkim: International Literary Festival 2024 Kicks Off in Gangtok

Gangtok: The International Literary Festival 2024 commenced at Gangtok’s Manan Kendra in Sikkim on October 26, 2024.

Organized by Pari Prakashan, Soreng, the festival aims to explore contemporary trends in Nepali literature and foster connections among writers, scholars, and literature enthusiasts.

The opening ceremony, held at 10 am, featured a welcome address by CP Dahal, President of Pari Prakashan. Dahal emphasized the significance of literary festivals in nurturing creativity and cultural exchange.

Notable attendees included Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and his wife, SR Subba, President of Sikkim Akademi, along with other esteemed literary figures.

The inaugural programme began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony led by CM Tamang, followed by Dr. Rajendra Bhandari’s announcement marking the festival’s official inauguration.

This year’s theme, “Experiments, Influences, and Trends Seen in Contemporary Nepali Literature,” set the stage for a thought-provoking panel discussion.

Renowned resource speakers, including Dr. Ramchandra Pokhrel, Professor Kavita Lama, Gyan Bahadur Chettri, Sudhir Chettri, and Dr. Durga Chettri, deliberated on the evolving landscape of Nepali literature, reflecting on its historical roots and contemporary challenges. The discussion was facilitated by Dr. Krishna Sapkota.

The festival also showcased vibrant cultural performances, including a presentation of Nepali folk instruments by Krishna Dhungel and a dance performance by Kanchanjunga State University. Additionally, the Alphabet Family showcased the community’s rich artistic talent.

Over the next two days, the festival promises engaging activities such as book launches, workshops, and networking opportunities for aspiring and established writers. As a platform for literary exchange and cultural dialogue, the event reinforces the importance of literature in society.
