Sikkim: Kundan Green Energy Secures Contract for 21 MW Hydropower Project

Northeast Desk, 5th March: Kundan Green Energy announced on Tuesday that it has been awarded a contract by the Sikkim government to establish a hydropower project with a capacity of 21 MW at Rellichu. The company stated its intention to complete the project by 2026, marking a significant milestone in Sikkim’s energy and developmental endeavors.

The Rellichu hydropower project is poised to contribute substantially to Sikkim’s energy landscape, generating 21 MW of power. Upon completion, it will augment Kundan Green Energy’s combined hydropower capacity to 125 MW, up from the existing 104 MW.

Udit Garg, Director of Kundan Green Energy, highlighted the Northeast’s substantial hydropower potential, accounting for 40% of India’s total capacity. He underscored Sikkim’s significant contribution to this potential, with an assessed peak capacity of 8,000 MW and a firm base of 3,000 MW.

Sikkim boasts 29 approved hydropower projects in various stages of development, along with a 55 MW small hydropower installed capacity, indicating its vast capability to harness hydroelectricity. However, the company did not disclose financial specifics regarding the Rellichu project.
