Sikkim Launches Powerful “Mothers’ Tears Are the Cane” Movement Against Drug Abuse
Gangtok: Sikkim has ignited a powerful statewide movement aimed at eradicating drug abuse, christened “Amma Kho Ashu Pushna Lathi,” which translates to “Mothers’ Tears Are the Cane.” The impactful initiative was officially launched on April 27th by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and HCM Madam Krishna Rai, marking a decisive step towards a drug-free future for the Himalayan state. The launch event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, dedicated mothers, and energetic youth hailing from the 23 Syari Constituency, underscoring the community’s unified resolve.
The core of the “Amma Kho Ashu Pushna Lathi” movement lies in directly confronting the escalating issue of drug abuse that has cast a shadow over numerous families in Sikkim. The poignant name itself encapsulates the profound emotional suffering endured by families, with mothers often bearing the heaviest burden of their children’s addiction. This crisis has tragically inverted traditional family dynamics, leaving mothers to grapple with immense emotional and sometimes physical strain.
The vision for this crucial initiative was spearheaded by Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, the Area MLA, who played an instrumental role in its conceptualization. This movement is also a significant part of the ongoing celebrations commemorating Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Anniversary, adding a layer of profound significance to the effort. Lamtha passionately called upon every citizen to actively participate in this vital cause, stressing that the responsibility of combating drug abuse rests collectively on the shoulders of the entire community, extending far beyond governmental efforts alone.
This proactive movement directly addresses the mounting concerns surrounding drug-related problems that are increasingly affecting Sikkim’s younger generation. Its primary objectives include widespread awareness campaigns, comprehensive public education on the perilous consequences of drug use, and the cultivation of a strong sense of communal responsibility in effectively tackling this crisis. Bolstered by the unwavering support of local mothers, vibrant youth organizations, and committed residents, the “Amma Kho Ashu Pushna Lathi” movement is poised to confront the drug problem head-on, ensuring it no longer remains a silent struggle.
In a heartfelt address during the launch, Krishna Rai expressed deep gratitude to the people of Sikkim for their unwavering commitment to this critical cause. She emphatically reaffirmed the state government’s steadfast dedication to overcoming the pervasive challenge of drug abuse. Furthermore, she underscored the fundamental necessity of collective action from every segment of the community to ensure the ultimate success of this vital mission.
