Sikkim Legislative Assembly Commences Seventh Session; Pays Tribute to Teesta Dam Disaster Victims

Northeast Desk, 2nd November: The Seventh Session (Part-II) of the Tenth Assembly commenced on November 2 at the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. During the session, members paid tribute to the victims of the Teesta dam disaster that occurred in the state on October 4, 2023.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang highlighted the government’s efforts in providing relief and introduced key decisions taken to assist those affected by the disaster. The session began with a solemn moment of remembrance in memory of the victims.

The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the disaster-affected individuals. He outlined various measures and schemes aimed at providing relief, including housing schemes, financial assistance, support for vehicle owners, and a moratorium for hotel owners.

To revitalize businesses affected by the disaster, the government has decided to provide loans up to Rs. 10 lakhs to business owners, with the first 24 months of interest covered in collaboration with various banks.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to individuals and organizations that generously contributed to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) during these challenging times, acknowledging their invaluable support.

Additionally, the Assembly introduced several important bills, including ones related to tax amendments, educational institutions, and skill education. These bills will be discussed during the session on November 3.
