Sikkim MLA Adopts Himalayan Thar in Wildlife Conservation Effort

Gangtok: Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the Shyari Constituency in Sikkim, has adopted a Himalayan Thar named Somdev under the state’s wildlife adoption programme, “My Child from Wild”.

The adoption ceremony took place on June 7 at the Himalayan Zoological Park, where Lamtha pledged his support for Somdev’s care, contributing Rs 1,00,000 towards the animal’s upkeep for a year.

As Advisor to the Forest and Environment Department, Lamtha’s gesture underscores his commitment to wildlife conservation. Somdev, being a significant member of the zoo’s breeding programme, has fathered numerous offspring, playing a vital role in building the park’s Himalayan Thar population. The majestic animal’s powerful appearance and leadership traits resonated with Lamtha, who believes that Somdev’s strength and resilience are qualities that humans should emulate.

Lamtha, known for his humility and dedication to public service, has been actively involved in various initiatives, including social service, youth development, and drug prevention. His grassroots movement, “Ama Ko Aasu Puch-ney Lathi” (“A Stick to Wipe the Tears of Mothers”), has garnered significant support, with over 600 registered mothers working together to prevent drug abuse among the youth.

The Himalayan Zoological Park officials have appreciated Lamtha’s direct involvement in animal welfare, noting that he has personally trekked the park’s 230-hectare area, inspecting enclosures and offering suggestions for improvement. This hands-on approach has not only boosted staff morale but also ensured better care for the animals. Lamtha’s adoption of Somdev reflects his dedication to conservation and his willingness to support initiatives that benefit the community and the environment.
