Sikkim: MP Hishey Lachungpa Urges Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for Immediate Action on Lachen Connectivity Crisis
Northeast Desk, 6th February: Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Hishey Lachungpa has reached out to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, calling for urgent intervention from the central government to address the ongoing connectivity crisis in Lachen, North Sikkim.
Lachungpa’s appeal highlights the severe disruption caused by Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) over four months ago, leaving Lachen isolated from essential road links and significantly impacting civilian life and military operations.
The communication underscores the critical need to restore connectivity from Chungthang to Lachen, emphasizing the urgency of the situation for both residents and the Indian Army stationed in the area.
Notable incidents, such as the necessity to airlift a deceased Lachen villager from Siliguri Hospital for burial rites, underscore the gravity of the situation and the immediate need for action.
Lachungpa expresses concern over the slow progress made by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) in restoring the National Highway, urging increased efficiency and dedication from the organization.
In response, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assures his commitment to prioritizing the matter, indicating a willingness to pursue the issue with urgency and diligence.
