Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba Advocates for Northeast Development, AI, and Climate Change at Parliamentary Meeting
Gangtok: Sikkim’s Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, on January 31 represented the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) during a crucial meeting of floor leaders from various political parties in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, focused on the pressing issues facing India, with Subba advocating for greater attention to development in the Northeast and urging a meaningful dialogue on critical challenges.
Subba, alongside prominent leaders such as Kiren Rijiju, J.P. Nadda, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and L. Murugan, called on all major political parties to ensure the smooth functioning of parliamentary proceedings.
He stressed the importance of giving members from smaller parties ample opportunity to contribute to discussions, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive platform for their voices.
Subba expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs for acknowledging the importance of speaking time for these members.
One of Subba’s key proposals during the session was to prioritize discussions on the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (MDoNER).
He urged that MPs from the Northeast be allowed to actively shape the development model for the region, addressing its unique challenges and opportunities.
In addition to regional development, Subba raised concerns about two significant global issues: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Climate Change. He called for dedicated discussions on the implications of AI, particularly its impact on governance, economic growth, and job creation.
Highlighting the urgency of addressing climate change, Subba stressed the need for focused dialogue on the environmental threats facing the Himalayas, including the alarming increase in glacial lakes and the potential natural disasters they could cause. He also underscored the profound effects of these environmental changes on local communities, biodiversity, and disaster preparedness.
Subba’s remarks underscored his commitment to advancing the Northeast’s development while addressing crucial global challenges, positioning these issues as critical for India’s future.
