Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba Urges Swift Action on Deteriorating National Highway 10 Amid Heavy Rains
Gangtok, September 28, 2024 – Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba has voiced urgent concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of National Highway 10 (NH10), which has been severely affected by continuous heavy rainfall. Subba emphasized that immediate action is essential, not only for the state’s economy but also for national security.
During a recent statement, Subba highlighted that NH10 is a critical artery for Sikkim, serving both commercial and defense purposes. “We cannot overlook the importance of this highway. It is vital for the state’s economy and crucial for national security,” he said.
The MP revealed that he has raised this pressing issue with national officials, including discussions with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “After the GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood), we reiterated the need for urgent attention to NH10,” he added.
Although NH10 falls under West Bengal’s jurisdiction, Subba argued that Sikkim cannot depend solely on state interventions for its maintenance. “Whenever issues arise with NH10, we cannot continuously inform the West Bengal government. During our election campaign, we pledged to urge central agencies to take over the maintenance of NH10, and we are nearing that objective,” he stated.
Subba explained that transferring the highway’s management to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) would streamline communication with the central government. “As a defense highway critical to national interest, if NH10 is affected, we must have direct lines of communication with the central authorities. This isn’t about confrontation; it’s about addressing a crucial matter that requires the Centre’s attention,” he clarified.
Highlighting the need for prompt action, Subba urged the government to increase the workforce dedicated to the road’s repair. “The decision to hand over NH10 to NHIDCL is almost finalized, and we are actively following it up. This road is essential for Sikkim’s economy and national security,” he insisted.
Looking to the future, Subba advocated for the development of alternative routes to bolster connectivity. “We have proposed an alternative highway from Melli to Singtam, which is currently under review by the central government. Furthermore, we have requested the construction of a new highway on the opposite side of the Teesta River, as short tunnels and bridges would provide more sustainable solutions in these vulnerable areas,” he explained.
“National Highway 10 remains one of our top priorities for Sikkim’s economic development and revenue generation. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang consistently brings this issue to the central government’s attention, and we are working proactively to resolve it,” Subba concluded.
He expressed optimism that the central government would take action once the rainy season ends, with hopes that road conditions would significantly improve in the coming six months. “We are committed to enhancing existing highways and finding long-term solutions to these ongoing challenges,” he affirmed.
