Sikkim MP Pushes for Boost in Organic Food Processing During Meeting with Chirag Paswan

Gangtok: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba met with Union Minister of Food Processing Industries Chirag Paswan on December 4 to advocate for critical support to the state’s organic farming and food processing sectors.

A key focus of the discussion was securing grants-in-aid for the Integrated Processing Unit (IPU) at Rangpo in Pakyong district, operated by Sikkim IFFCO Organics Limited (SIOL). The facility is designed to process organic produce like ginger, turmeric, large cardamom, and buckwheat, with the aim of empowering local farmers and enhancing Sikkim’s presence in global organic markets.

Subba highlighted that previous compliance issues, which delayed the approval under the CEFPPC scheme, have been addressed and urged the Minister to expedite the financial assistance necessary to operationalize the IPU.

The MP also emphasized the need to expand food processing infrastructure across Sikkim, proposing the establishment of micro food processing units in towns and villages. He suggested equipping Self-Help Groups (SHGs), cooperatives, and Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies (MPCS) with training and resources to improve the processing and marketing of organic products. These initiatives, Subba noted, would enhance the value chain, create jobs, and improve farmer livelihoods.

Minister Paswan acknowledged Sikkim’s global leadership in organic farming and assured positive consideration of the proposals. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to fostering sustainable and inclusive growth in the region, aligning with India’s broader organic agriculture goals.

The meeting represents a significant step towards bolstering Sikkim’s organic and food processing sectors, reinforcing its position as a model state in sustainable agriculture.
