Sikkim Olympic Association Celebrates International Olympic Day with Vibrant Events

Northeast Desk, 23th June: The Sikkim Olympic Association (SOA) commemorated International Olympic Day with a series of dynamic events and activities under the theme “Let’s Move and Let’s Celebrate,” emphasizing the significance of physical activity and the forthcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.

President Kuber Bhandari underscored the dual importance of this year’s theme. “Let’s Move” encourages everyone to step out of their comfort zones and engage in sports and physical activities, while “Let’s Celebrate” serves as a tribute to the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, adding a special touch to this year’s celebration.

A highlight of the event was the celebration of Padmashree Tarundeep Rai’s selection for the Paris 2024 Olympic archery team. Rai, a proud son of Sikkim, has qualified for both team and individual events, bringing immense pride and glory to the state.

Bhandari also extended congratulations to the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party for their recent electoral success and expressed joy at the presence of Sports Minister Raju Basnet at the event. “We are thrilled to have our sports minister with us today,” he remarked, noting that it reflects the government’s commitment to promoting sports in Sikkim.

The celebration featured a host of events starting early in the morning. At 8 am, a 1.5 km swim saw participation from 30 enthusiastic swimmers, graced by Chief Guest Sports Minister Raju Basnet. Following this, a 10 km cycling ride was flagged off, a hurdle race was conducted, and a walkathon took place.

The Khelo India State Centre of Excellence hosted boxing and archery events, with the sports minister in attendance. A blood donation camp highlighted the day’s theme of health and well-being, while indoor activities such as basketball, wushu, and taekwondo ensured a diverse representation of sports.

President Bhandari reaffirmed the association’s dedication to promoting the Olympic movement in Sikkim and encouraging youth participation in sports. “We are working to bring the Olympic spirit to Sikkim,” he stated. “Our aim is to inspire the youth and involve them in sporting activities. Lectures on sports are being conducted in schools across the state,” he added.

The SOA’s efforts reflect a strong commitment to fostering a culture of sports and physical fitness in Sikkim, aligning with the broader Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
