Sikkim: Powerful Storm Brings Widespread Disruption to Gangtok
Gangtok: A powerful storm swept through Gangtok, Sikkim’s capital, on April 23, causing significant disruptions to daily life. The storm brought strong winds and torrential rainfall, resulting in an extensive power outage that has lasted over 12 hours in several neighbourhoods.
The storm uprooted numerous trees, which collapsed onto electric poles and power lines, severely damaging critical infrastructure. Neighbourhoods such as Deorali, Tadong, and Upper Sichey have been particularly affected, with residents reporting no electricity since late Wednesday evening.
The prolonged power failure has created substantial hardship for both residents and businesses, disrupting essential services including internet connectivity, refrigeration, and water pumping systems in many buildings. The Power Department has deployed crews to the affected areas, who are working tirelessly to repair damaged infrastructure and restore electricity supply.
While officials have not yet provided an estimated timeline for complete restoration, the Power Department is working continuously to address the issue. Residents and businesses are hoping for a swift resolution to the power outage, which has significantly impacted daily life in Gangtok.
