Sikkim Premier League Gears Up for Thrilling Third Season with New Team and Ticketing System
Gangtok: The highly anticipated third edition of the Sikkim Premier League (SPL) is set to kick off on April 10th at the Bhaichung Stadium in Namchi, promising football enthusiasts another season of exciting action.
The opening fixture will be a repeat of last year’s final, as reigning champions Singling FC lock horns with Thunderbolt North United in a highly anticipated rematch.
This season marks a significant milestone with the inclusion of a brand-new team, Black Eagles SC. Their entry has generated considerable buzz among football followers across Sikkim. Nirmal Chettri, a board member of Football Development Private Ltd (FDPL), the league’s organizer, emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating, “The addition of Black Eagles aligns with the original goals of SPL. The tournament was created to give more local players a platform, and now we are seeing growth not just in the number of teams but also in the quality of players. It’s encouraging to see how participation has grown.”
A notable change for SPL Season 3 is the introduction of a ticketing system for the matches. While access will remain open to many, a pay-per-view arrangement has been implemented, with ticket prices ranging from ₹50 to ₹100. However, in a move to encourage youth participation, students in school or college uniforms or those carrying valid ID cards, along with children below the age of 15, will be granted free entry. Explaining this decision, FDPL member Nim Tshering Lepcha said, “This decision wasn’t made for money. We believe that when players see fans buying tickets to watch them, they will play with more passion. It’s about creating a sense of pride and motivation.”
Further enhancing the competitive landscape, the SPL has revised its team composition rules. Previously, teams were limited to a maximum of three foreign players and four players from outside Sikkim. This season, these limits have been increased to five foreign players and five out-of-state players per team. This adjustment aims to elevate the overall standard of play while continuing to foster local talent. Complementing this, there will be an increased focus on providing opportunities for under-19 players, offering crucial exposure at the state level for young footballers.
The Sikkim Premier League is an initiative of Football Development Pvt. Ltd., an organization founded by five former national-level footballers hailing from Sikkim. The league operates under the patronage of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, with support from the Sikkim Football Association (SFA) and sponsorship from the Government of Sikkim and Dear Government Lotteries.
The organizers are optimistic that the third season will propel the league to new heights in terms of fan engagement, player performance, and the overall prominence of football in Sikkim. They firmly believe that SPL Season 3 will not only provide captivating entertainment but also serve as an inspiration for the next generation of footballers within the state.
