Sikkim Reinforces ODF-Free Status, Expands Sanitation Infrastructure

Sikkim: The Himalayan state of Sikkim, a pioneer in sanitation and hygiene, continues to solidify its position as an ODF-Free state.

On World Toilet Day, the state reiterated its commitment to maintaining its ODF status and expanding its sanitation infrastructure.

Since achieving ODF status in 2016, Sikkim has focused on constructing Individual Household Latrines (IHHL) and Community Sanitation Complexes (CSC) to cater to the needs of its rural population. Recent efforts have resulted in the construction of 7,362 IHHLs, bringing the total to 14,570 across the state.

Additionally, Sikkim has established 679 CSCs, including 427 Divyang-friendly facilities, to provide shared sanitation facilities in public spaces. These complexes, costing Rs 3,10,000 each, ensure accessibility for people with disabilities.

Sikkim’s dedication to sanitation has earned national recognition. In 2019, the state was awarded first place in the ODF Plus IEC Campaign at the Swachh Bharat Puraskar, recognizing its innovative campaigns and efforts in rural waste management.

The state’s continued focus on community participation, coupled with the tireless efforts of field teams, has been instrumental in sustaining its ODF-Free status, even in the face of seasonal challenges.
