Sikkim Remembers Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on 125th Birth Anniversary

Gangtok: Sikkim today solemnly observed the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a towering figure in India’s nationalist movement and a key architect of the nation’s cultural unity. A commemorative event was held at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok, drawing a distinguished gathering to honour his legacy.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang led the tributes, joined by the Deputy Speaker, several Cabinet Ministers, the Lok Sabha MP, various MLAs, other dignitaries, and senior government officials, all present to mark the significant occasion.

In his keynote address, Chief Minister Tamang lauded Dr. Mookerjee as a “visionary thinker, a dedicated educationist, and a fearless advocate for India’s unity and integrity.” He emphasised the enduring relevance of Mookerjee’s principles in contemporary India.

“On this sacred milestone, we solemnly remember a visionary who laid the foundation for a self-reliant and united Bharat,” Tamang stated, highlighting Dr. Mookerjee’s steadfast commitment to swadeshi values and his lasting impact as a symbol of national pride and cultural nationalism.

The Chief Minister further praised Dr. Mookerjee’s ideals, describing them as a continuous wellspring of inspiration for forging an economically self-reliant India. He attributed the nation’s progress as a strong and united democracy to the contributions of patriots like Mookerjee.

Tamang also acknowledged the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that it is under his guidance that the contributions of national icons such as Dr. Mookerjee are finally receiving the long-overdue recognition they deserve.

Calling for the nation’s highest civilian honour, Tamang asserted, “The time has come for the nation to bestow upon Dr. Mookerjee the Bharat Ratna, in recognition of his invaluable service to the nation.”
