Sikkim: Rinchenpong Bazaar Beautification Drive Enhances Urban Greenery
Gangtok: A large-scale plantation drive was successfully conducted at Rinchenpong Bazaar, marking a significant step towards urban beautification and environmental sustainability.
The initiative, part of the Bazaar Beautification Program, aligns with Chief Minister P.S. Tamang’s vision of Swachha Vichaar, Swachha Sanskaar and was spearheaded by the Urban Development Department (UDD) of Soreng District.
Held from March 4 to March 13, 2025, the initiative was led by Bazaar Officer MaryGold Lucksom, who oversaw the systematic plantation of saplings to enhance the marketplace’s aesthetic appeal. The program witnessed active participation from various stakeholders, including MLA and Advisor to Roads & Bridges, Erung Tenzing Lepcha, whose presence further reinforced the significance of community-led urban transformation.
The Soreng UDD extended its gratitude to Additional Secretary Bishal Mukhia and Sub-Inspector Dadul Bhutia (Jorethang Circle Office, UDD Jorethang) for their strategic guidance in the project. Assistant Sub-Inspector Gaurav Subba (Bazaar Incharge, UDD Soreng) played a key role in ensuring the smooth execution of the initiative, coordinating efforts between various departments and community members.
The plantation drive saw enthusiastic participation from local leaders, including Pramesh Gurung (President, Rinchenpong Bazaar Committee), Hessal Bhutia (Ward Panchayat, Tadong Rinchenpong GPU), and senior advisors of the Rinchenpong Bazaar Committee, all of whom emphasized the importance of community-driven urban development. Additionally, Thupden Palzang Bhutia, J.E., PWD, mobilized manpower, ensuring the drive’s efficiency and success.
Reflecting on the initiative, Bazaar Officer MaryGold Lucksom remarked, “True urban beautification is not just about planting trees, but about fostering a collective responsibility for our environment. This effort is a step towards sustainable community development.” With strong community participation and strategic planning, the Rinchenpong Bazaar Beautification Program stands as a model for sustainable urban initiatives in the region.
