Sikkim: Rs 1190 Crore Allocated for New Bridge Over Teesta River in North Bengal
Gangtok: Darjeeling MP Raju Bista announced on February 7 that the Central government has allocated Rs 1190 crore for the construction of a new bridge over the Teesta River, a significant infrastructure development for North Bengal.
This new bridge will serve as a crucial alternative to the deteriorating Coronation Bridge, which has been in a state of disrepair for many years.
The project, encompassing the bridge and approach roads, will extend over 6.85 km, connecting Sevoke in Darjeeling to Ellenbari. This vital infrastructure aims to enhance connectivity between Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Sikkim, Siliguri, and the Dooars region.
During the ongoing Parliament session, MP Raju Bista raised concerns about the condition of the Coronation Bridge and inquired about the progress of its replacement. In response, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, confirmed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new bridge is in its final stages of approval. He also stated that the project, upon approval, is expected to be completed within 36 months from the commencement date.
The Coronation Bridge, constructed in 1937, has suffered significant damage over the years, particularly due to the earthquakes of 2011 and 2015. Despite its critical condition, the West Bengal Public Works Department (WB-PWD) has not undertaken any substantial repair work. Recognizing the bridge’s crucial role in connecting key regions, the need for a replacement has been a pressing demand for years.
The completion of the new bridge will not only modernize the transportation network in North Bengal but also significantly reduce travel distance by 14 km. This will result in reduced travel time between Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Sikkim, Siliguri, and the Dooars region, benefiting commuters, traders, and tourists.
Furthermore, the new bridge will strengthen infrastructure within the strategically important “Chicken Neck” corridor, a narrow strip of land connecting mainland India to the Northeast.
Expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Nitin Gadkari, Raju Bista emphasized that this project underscores the government’s commitment to the development of the Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars region.
The improved infrastructure is anticipated to stimulate economic growth, enhance transportation efficiency, and improve safety for daily commuters.
