Sikkim: Sangha MLA Seeks Rectification from Election Commission
Northeast Desk, 18th March: Sangha MLA Sonam Lama has taken a proactive stance following the recent press note issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on March 16. The note labeled the 32 Sangha Constituency as ‘GEN’, prompting Lama to seek rectification from the appropriate authority.
Lama’s primary concern is to safeguard the rights of this crucial and constitutional institution against any potential infringement or corruption. The Sangha Seat, reserved for recognized Sikkim monasteries in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, holds significant importance, reflecting Sikkim’s unique history and tradition. It was established under the Representation of Peoples (Amendment) Act 1980.
In a letter addressed to the CEO, Sikkim, the Sangha MLA emphasized the need for rectification, citing the clear provisions of the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act, 1980. The Act explicitly reserves one seat for the Sanghas referred to in section 25 A. The incorrect designation of the 32 Sangha Constituency as ‘GEN’ has raised concerns among stakeholders and risks diluting the special political rights granted to the monks and monasteries of Sikkim.
Lama’s efforts underscore the importance of upholding the integrity and representation of Sikkim’s unique cultural and religious institutions within the legislative framework.
