Sikkim: SDF Urges President’s Rule Amid Rising Political Violence
Northeast Desk, 11th March: The Opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), led by its chief Pawan Chamling, organized a massive peace rally to voice grave concerns over the escalating political violence in the state.
Commencing from the SDF party headquarters at Indira Bye Pass, the rally culminated at the District Administrative Centre. The primary motive behind the rally was to protest against the Melli attack on former Speaker KN Rai.
Addressing the media post-rally, Pawan Chamling reiterated concerns over the surge in violence under the SKM rule. He expressed apprehensions regarding the forthcoming elections, emphasizing the imperative need for ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process, as mandated by the Election Commission of India. Hence, he called for the immediate imposition of President’s Rule to uphold democratic principles.
Chamling underscored the predictable pattern of heightened violence under the current administration and cited this as grounds for invoking the special powers vested in the Governor under Article 371F (g) of the Constitution to enforce President’s Rule.
Furthermore, Chamling affirmed the SDF’s commitment to maintaining peace and upholding law and order in the state.
Despite the apprehension, Chamling demanded the apprehension of the mastermind behind the KN Rai attack case, despite the police having already arrested all seven prime suspects involved.
