Sikkim Seeks Green Bonus, Special Financial Package for Environmental Stewardship
Gangtok: Rajya Sabha MP Dorjee Tshering Lepcha has urged the central government to recognize Sikkim’s unparalleled commitment to environmental conservation by granting a “Green Bonus” and a special financial package.
During a Special Mention in the Upper House on Monday, Lepcha highlighted Sikkim’s extraordinary achievements in sustainable development. With over 82% forest cover and 31% of its land under protected areas, the state has set a global benchmark for environmental stewardship.
“Sikkim, with its pristine landscapes and rich biodiversity, has made significant sacrifices to protect our planet,” Lepcha said. “A Green Bonus would not only acknowledge these efforts but also incentivize other states to adopt sustainable practices.”
The MP emphasized that Sikkim’s stringent land-use regulations, while crucial for environmental protection, have imposed significant economic constraints. The state has also borne the brunt of natural disasters, including recent flash floods and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
Lepcha’s proposal seeks to provide much-needed financial support to help Sikkim overcome these challenges and continue its pioneering work in sustainable development. By recognizing and rewarding environmental leadership, the central government can inspire other states to follow suit and contribute to a greener future.
