Sikkim: Senior SDF leader brutally attacked by SKM workers ahead of Elections
Northeast Desk, 1st March: Senior SDF Party leader K. N. Rai and spokesperson Dr. Shiva Kumar Timshina were reportedly physically assaulted by members of the SKM party at Mazi Gaon, Melli around 2:30 pm.
The SDF has strongly denounced this act and called for immediate police intervention, highlighting concerns about the state of democracy and the rule of law in Sikkim.
This incident comes amid escalating tensions between the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party.
Alleging attacks on its cadres by the SKM, the SDF has urged the Election Commission to impose central rule in the state ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly polls scheduled for April-May.
In a memorandum addressed to the chief election commissioner, SDF leader and former chief minister Pawan Chamling accused SKM members, allegedly supported by the state government, of assaulting SDF workers in “the most heinous of ways.” Chamling claimed that SDF workers were being prevented by the ruling party from reaching out to voters ahead of the elections, demanding the imposition of President’s rule to ensure a level playing field for all political parties.
Amidst mounting tensions and allegations of violence, Chamling urged the poll panel to direct the state administration to take firm action to uphold the rule of law and ensure a fair electoral process in Sikkim. The situation remains tense as the state braces for crucial elections amidst calls for intervention to address escalating political unrest.
