Sikkim: Soreng Police Nab Govt Employee in Major Drug Haul

Gangtok: Soreng District Police achieved a significant victory against drug trafficking on Sunday, apprehending a government employee and seizing a substantial cache of suspected contraband near Chakung Gate. The meticulously planned operation, executed around 6:30 PM on July 6, saw police intercept a Bolero taxi (Reg. No. SK02J/1340) travelling on the Siliguri-Soreng route.

The individual taken into custody was identified as Binod Chettri, a resident of Dodak and a Lower Division Clerk (LDC) at the Block Administrative Centre (BAC) in Soreng. Chettri’s detention was the culmination of prior surveillance and actionable intelligence. A thorough search, conducted in the presence of the Block Development Officer (BDO), led to the recovery of a dark brown cloth pouch containing 127 loose tablets. Also found was a file of blue-coloured Proximec Spas, a pharmaceutical drug frequently diverted for recreational abuse.

Police have formally registered a case under the pertinent sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Officials have indicated that ongoing investigations aim to pinpoint the origin of the seized drugs and ascertain any potential connections the accused may have to a larger drug network. Authorities have also suggested that further arrests are likely in the coming days as efforts intensify to curb the illegal circulation of drugs within the district.
