Sikkim: STNM Hospital Faces Allegations of Medical Negligence After Surgical Forceps Found in Patient’s Abdomen

Gangtok: SIR Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital is under scrutiny after a pair of surgical forceps was discovered inside the abdomen of Mrs. Rita Chetri, 12 years after she underwent an appendectomy. The incident has raised serious concerns over alleged medical negligence at the hospital.

Rita Chetri, now 51, had her appendix removed at STNM Hospital in January 2012. Following her surgery, she was discharged after 17 days, but experienced persistent stomach aches over the years.

Despite her complaints, doctors consistently attributed her symptoms to gastric issues and prescribed various medications without further investigation.

Her husband, Balaram Chetri, expressed frustration over the years of misdiagnosis, stating, “We were given medications for gastric problems and vitamins, but no one thought to investigate further. Sometimes, she felt unwell, but we had no idea that something serious was left inside her.”

After enduring years of discomfort, Rita developed urinary issues this year. A biopsy in Namchi revealed concerning results, leading to her referral back to STNM for further examination.

On October 7, doctors identified an infection, and an X-ray revealed the shocking presence of surgical forceps left in her abdomen.

“I couldn’t believe it when they told me,” said Balaram. “I thought it was impossible. The doctors assured us they could remove it, and on October 8, they did just that.”

Following the surgery, hospital authorities confirmed that the forceps were successfully extracted. Speaking to media, STNM Hospital stated that a high-level meeting will be convened today to discuss the issue, with updates to be provided once the meeting concludes.

The case has sparked widespread criticism, with calls for a thorough investigation into hospital practices and measures to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents in the future.
