Sikkim: Stray Dog Shot and Killed in Gangtok; Investigation Underway
Northeast Desk, 22nd July: On July 19, a white stray dog, estimated to be between 3-4 years old, was shot and killed in Gangtok’s Kazi Road area. The incident was reported by a local resident to the NGO People For Animals (PFA) Sikkim, led by Maneka Gandhi.
Initial attempts to gather information from locals proved fruitless, as no one was willing to discuss the incident. However, it was later discovered that the dog had been buried nearby. An anonymous source revealed that the cause of death was a gunshot, though no further details about the shooter were provided.
A case was registered at Sadar Thana, leading to the exhumation of the dog’s body for examination. The post-mortem confirmed that the dog had been shot in the chest. Reports also indicated that this was not the first such incident in the area.
Animal activist Sagar Singh brought the case to media attention, while Mrs. Rebina Rai of PFA Sikkim registered the case and subsequently buried the dog’s remains at her residence in Assam Lingzey.
PFA Sikkim has condemned the act and is collaborating with local police to seek justice for the dog. Maneka Gandhi has been informed of the situation and is in contact with SP Gangtok, Tenzing Loden Lepcha, who has promised a thorough investigation.
This incident highlights the need for greater compassion and respect for animals, underscoring that while everyone may not advocate for animal rights, no one has the right to harm or kill them. The hope is that this tragic event will lead to heightened awareness and prevent future occurrences.
