Sikkim: Sudden Snowfall Disrupts Travel from Tsomgo Lake to Gangtok

Gangtok: A sudden and intense bout of snowfall on the afternoon of March 22nd created significant travel disruptions for those journeying from Sikkim’s Tsomgo Lake towards Gangtok. Vehicles, including those carrying tourists, encountered substantial difficulties navigating the now slippery and low-visibility roads.

The unexpected heavy snowfall, impacting the lake and surrounding high-altitude areas, quickly transformed the roadways into hazardous paths. Tourists, who had been enjoying the scenic beauty of Tsomgo Lake, found their return journey impeded as their vehicles struggled to maintain traction.

Reports indicate that the freshly fallen snow, adding to the pre-existing winter conditions, rendered the roads treacherous. The popular tourist destination, situated at an altitude of 3,753 meters, is known for its susceptibility to heavy snowfall, particularly during the winter and early spring months, leading to unpredictable travel conditions.

Authorities have issued advisories urging travelers to exercise extreme caution when navigating the affected routes. Local transport operators are implementing heightened safety measures to safeguard passengers. In several instances, vehicles were forced to make temporary stops, waiting for the weather conditions to improve and visibility to increase.
