Sikkim: Teesta River swept away NH-10 Along With Army Vehicles and Personnel; Search and Rescue Operations Underway

Northeast Desk, 4th October: Sikkim’s Teesta river has reached a historic high due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that struck various parts of the state, causing extensive destruction with landslides and flooding affecting the region.

The latest reports indicate that around 25 army vehicles, portions of ATTC college, and several army personnel have been swept away in the aftermath of this disaster.

Sources have also pointed out the imminent danger of further harm, as the South Lhonal Lake is on the verge of overflowing, which could potentially trigger flash floods. Furthermore, there is an elevated risk of the South Khonak river exceeding its banks, indicating a potentially precarious situation.

Residents in low-lying areas, particularly Sangkalang, Bringbong, Ohidang, Dikchu, Makha, Singtam, Rangpo, and Melli, have been advised to relocate to safer locations.

In the meantime, the State Disaster Management Minister Kunga Nima Lepcha, along with Ministers BS Panth and LB Das, along with DC and officials, have reached the flood-affected regions of Singtam, Adarsh Goan, and surrounding areas.

Rescue efforts are currently underway in the affected regions.
