Sikkim to Benefit from Rs 3295 Crore Tourism Infrastructure Boost
Sikkim: Sikkim is set to benefit from two major tourism infrastructure projects under the Government of India’s Rs 3295 crore initiative aimed at enhancing tourist destinations across 23 states.
Funded through the Scheme of Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), these projects will improve facilities and promote local culture.
One of the key developments is a Skywalk at Bhaleydunga, Yangang, Namchi, in South Sikkim. With a budget allocation of Rs 97.37 crore, the 240-metre-long glass-bottom Skywalk will be located at an altitude of 3,200 meters. Accessible via a 3.5-kilometre ropeway, visitors will be treated to panoramic views of Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary and the Bhaleydunga Peak. The project also includes a funicular, supporting facilities, and is expected to create 61 local jobs. This initiative is designed to establish Sikkim as an eco-tourism hub.
The second project, located at Nathula Pass, a crucial point on the India-China border, will receive Rs 68.19 crore to improve infrastructure. The plan includes additional parking, tourist information centres, and recreational amenities to enhance the visitor experience. Approximately 30 local jobs will be created through this development, which aims to manage the growing tourist influx.
These investments are expected to stimulate Sikkim’s tourism industry, making it a more attractive eco-tourism destination while creating sustainable economic opportunities for local communities.
