Sikkim: Tourism Department Addresses Overcharging and Grievance Redressal for Tourists
Northeast Desk, 21st May: On May 21, Principal Secretary of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, C S Rao, convened a meeting to address a complaint received through the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS). The discussion centered on the prevention of overcharging tourists and enhancing the grievance redressal system.
In his address, Principal Secretary Rao emphasized the need for stringent monitoring to prevent fare overcharges. He stressed strengthening the department’s grievance cell and launching helpline numbers for immediate assistance and issue resolution. Rao called for a review of rates charged by tour operators and travel agencies, insisting that rate charts be strictly adhered to, and urged companies to avoid overpricing services.
Rao also highlighted the necessity for tourists to engage only with registered tour operators sanctioned by the government, ensuring safety standards and quality service.
Principal Chief Engineer Neeraj Pradhan discussed the establishment of a redressal cell at Nathula, which will serve as a facilitation center operated by the department. He also mentioned ongoing engineering projects aimed at enhancing tourist safety and experience in the state.
Additional Secretary Bandana Chettri underscored the importance of using the department’s official website for bookings to avoid inconvenience. She advised tourists to book tours through registered travel agencies and verify their authenticity on the website, www.sikkimtourism.gov.in.
Deputy Director of the Permit Cell, Sonam Rinchen Bhutia, advised tourists to obtain permits through local travel agencies at least one day in advance to avoid inconvenience. He emphasized the importance of acclimatizing to higher altitudes and proceeding only with a valid permit.
The meeting stressed the importance of all agencies adhering to rules and regulations to prevent tourist inconvenience. Ensuring tourist safety and providing fair-priced services were prioritized to ensure a seamless experience for visitors.
