Sikkim Transport Department Issues Clarification Amid Fake News on Vehicle Re-Registration Tax

Gangtok: In response to rampant misinformation on social media, the Motor Vehicles Division of the Sikkim Transport Department has issued a formal clarification refuting claims of an arbitrary ₹25,000 tax hike on vehicle re-registration in the state.

In an official press release dated June 18, 2025, the department referenced Notification No. 19/CCS/GOS/MVD/2025, issued on March 27, 2025, to confirm that the maximum additional tax is capped at ₹5,000, depending on the vehicle’s age and category.

“The information circulating on various social media platforms is completely incorrect and misleading,” the department stated.

The Transport Department clarified that the revised tax structure is proportional, not a flat fee, and is calculated based on specific parameters, including vehicle age, type, and intended use. The changes were implemented to streamline regulatory compliance, especially for inter-state transfers and ownership updates, not to financially burden vehicle owners.

Officials stressed that no arbitrary increase has been imposed and urged citizens to avoid believing or sharing unverified posts.

Citizens are encouraged to check authentic updates only via the department’s official website: www.transportdepartment.sikkim.gov.in

The department also reminded the public to verify information through official government channels before reacting to or circulating social media claims.
