Sikkim Unveils First Super Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) Building to Promote Sustainable Development

Northeast Desk, 29th September: The Power Department, functioning as a State Designated Agency (SDA) under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India, inaugurated Sikkim’s first Super Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) building in Lagyap, Ranipool, on September 29. This landmark event underscores the state’s commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable development, drawing attention from government officials and stakeholders alike.

The inauguration ceremony featured Sanjeet Kharel, Advisor to the Power Department, as the chief guest, alongside MLA Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, who served as the guest of honor. The event began with a welcome address from Shri Pemba Lepcha, Chief Engineer-cum-Nodal Officer of the SSDA, who emphasized the building as a symbol of Sikkim’s dedication to modern, energy-efficient infrastructure. He stated that the facility not only meets national standards but also sets a benchmark for future projects within the region.

A video presentation showcased the innovative design and features of the Super ECBC building, offering attendees insight into its energy-efficient systems, sustainable materials, and advanced architectural techniques designed to reduce energy consumption while enhancing comfort and functionality.

During the keynote address, Prabhakar Verma, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Revenue) of the Power Department, highlighted the critical role of energy conservation in addressing climate change and achieving sustainable development goals. He urged stakeholders to embrace energy-efficient practices and work collaboratively towards a greener future for Sikkim.

The inauguration of this Super ECBC building represents a significant milestone for Sikkim, reflecting a proactive approach to enhancing the state’s energy efficiency landscape. It not only serves as a model for future constructions but also reinforces Sikkim’s position as a leader in sustainable development.

A special segment of the program was dedicated to honoring the contributions of retired SDA officials, including Dilip Kumar Sharma, Retd. Principal Chief Engineer-cum-Nodal Officer; D.P. Deokota, Retd. Chief Engineer-cum-Nodal Officer; and P.M. Sharma, Secretary SSERC. Their years of dedicated service were acknowledged with heartfelt accolades, illustrating the SDA’s appreciation for their commitment to promoting energy efficiency in the state. Project members instrumental in the development of the Super ECBC building were also recognized for their hard work and dedication.

In his address, Sanjeet Kharel expressed his admiration for the SSDA’s visionary approach in developing the Super ECBC building. “This building is not just a structure; it is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and energy conservation,” he remarked. Kharel further stressed the importance of leadership in energy efficiency, encouraging all government departments and stakeholders to adopt similar practices, thereby fostering a culture of sustainability throughout the state.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Sigratha Pradhan, Executive Engineer of SSDA, who expressed gratitude to all officials, dignitaries, and attendees for their participation and support, marking the event a success. With the inauguration of the Super ECBC building, Sikkim is poised to lead the way in sustainable architectural practices, setting an inspiring example for others to follow.
