Sikkim Witnesses Growth in Voter Numbers with Inclusion of Transgender Voters

Northeast Desk, 5th Jan: Sikkim’s Chief Electoral Officer, D Anandan, revealed on January 5 that the state’s voter count has reached 462,456 as of January 1, 2024. This reflects a notable increase of 4,050 voters from the earlier draft roll, marking a 0.88 per cent net growth.

Breaking down the figures, Anandan reported that the special summary revision added 13,716 new voters, while 9,666 names were deleted due to deaths or individuals permanently relocating from Sikkim. The final roll comprises 232,117 male voters, 230,334 female voters, and notably includes five transgender voters.

Anandan highlighted the success of the state’s drive to enroll persons with disabilities (PwD) in the electoral process. Collaborating with the Women and Child Welfare Department, the state provided district collectors with a comprehensive database and contact list. Booth Level Officers (BLO) visited the homes of PwD individuals, resulting in the registration of 3,856 disabled voters in Sikkim’s voter list as of January 1, 2024.

Encouraging further participation, Anandan urged citizens to help identify eligible persons with disabilities who may not have registered, emphasizing the importance of their inclusion in the democratic process.
