Sikkim Woman Horrified by Obscene WhatsApp Video Call
Sikkim: A 31-year-old woman from Amdogaoli, Tadong, in Sikkim was left shaken after an unknown individual allegedly exposed himself during a WhatsApp video call. The incident, which unfolded on May 29, prompted the woman to file a First Information Report (FIR) at Sadar Police Station the following day.
According to the complaint lodged on May 30 at approximately 8:03 pm, the victim received multiple video calls from an unknown number starting around 8:59 am on May 29. Initially, she dismissed them, but the persistent caller tried again at 9:03 am. Mistaking it for a call from a co-worker, she answered, only to be confronted with a shocking display of the caller’s private parts on her screen. “I was horrified,” the victim recounted in her statement to the police. “I thought it was someone I knew, but what I saw was completely unacceptable. No one should have to go through this.”
Disturbed by the incident, the woman confided in a friend who took it upon himself to confront the perpetrator. Upon calling the number, the friend reportedly challenged the individual, questioning their lack of shame for making such video calls to women. The unidentified caller allegedly responded dismissively with a nonchalant “Haan Haan Haan” before abruptly ending the call when warned of impending legal action.
The Sadar Police Station has registered an FIR under sections 75 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which address sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of a woman. Additionally, section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, pertaining to the transmission of sexually explicit content, has been invoked. An officer at Sadar Police Station has been assigned to investigate the matter, with efforts underway to trace and apprehend the unknown perpetrator.
