Sikkim Youth Achieves Top Rank in National Defence Academy Examination

Gangtok: Gangtok witnessed a moment of pride as Hisseychoda Sherpa, a 17-year-old hailing from the state, secured an impressive All India Rank of 187 in the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy Examination (II), 2024.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) released the results, listing 792 successful candidates who cleared the rigorous written examination and the subsequent Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews.

Growing up in Gangtok, Hisseychoda found profound inspiration in the lives of Indian Army heroes. He specifically mentioned Paratrooper Sanjog Chhetri, a fellow Sikkimese and the youngest recipient of the Ashok Chakra, and Captain Vijyant Thapar, a Kargil War hero posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra. He expressed that the stories of their dedication and bravery deeply resonated with him, fueling his aspiration to dedicate his life to a noble cause. The discipline and lifestyle of soldiers, he stated, solidified his resolve to pursue a career in the armed forces, leading him to avidly read about the army.

Hisseychoda attributed his success to the unwavering support of his family, teachers, and friends. He expressed his gratitude to them for their belief in his potential. Furthermore, he conveyed that a significant driving force for him was the desire to serve as an inspiration to others, emphasizing that the achievements of national heroes serve as a testament to what can be accomplished.

Looking ahead, Hisseychoda offered words of encouragement to young aspirants, urging them to follow their passions with honesty and dedication, assuring them that success would undoubtedly follow.

According to the official statement from the Government of India, Hisseychoda, along with the other successful candidates, will now proceed to join the 154th Course of the NDA and the 116th Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC). The current list is provisional, pending the results of the medical examination. All provisionally selected candidates are required to submit their necessary documents and certificates to the Additional Directorate General of Recruiting at the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi.

The National Defence Academy, located in Khadakwasla, Pune, holds the distinction of being a premier global defence institution. It provides comprehensive training for future officers of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. The NDA examination is highly competitive, demanding a combination of intellectual prowess, physical fitness, and mental fortitude from its aspirants.
