Gangtok – Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur has concluded a series of high-level meetings in the national capital, engaging with top political figures to champion the state’s progress and address pressing concerns. The discussions, held over the past few days, underscored a concerted effort towards holistic development and enhanced security in the Himalayan state.
In a pivotal meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor Mathur delved into a wide spectrum of issues crucial for Sikkim’s advancement. A key point of discussion was the ‘Vibrant Village’ scheme, specifically tailored to invigorate the state’s border regions, according to an official statement released by the Raj Bhavan on Saturday. This initiative is expected to bring significant socio-economic upliftment to remote areas.
The Governor also held a fruitful interaction with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, where he presented a comprehensive overview of ongoing developmental projects across Sikkim. The discourse primarily revolved around bolstering infrastructure, elevating educational standards, promoting tourism, and strengthening welfare initiatives, all aimed at significantly improving the quality of life for the people of Sikkim, as noted in a separate communiqué.
Security and disaster preparedness were at the forefront of Governor Mathur’s meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The Governor highlighted the profound impact of the recent natural disaster in the Mangan district, which tragically resulted in the loss of Army personnel. This unfortunate incident underscored the critical need for reinforced safety measures and improved disaster response mechanisms in the region.
These significant deliberations in Delhi coincided with the auspicious commencement of the annual Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. This government-organised pilgrimage, running from June to September, traverses through the challenging terrains of Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La in Sikkim, a route that has been operational since 1981 and 2015 respectively, facilitating spiritual journeys for countless devotees.
Last month, Sikkim proudly observed its golden jubilee of statehood with grand celebrations. While Prime Minister Modi was scheduled to attend the events in person on May 29, adverse weather conditions necessitated a virtual address instead. This incident served as a stark reminder of the unique climatic challenges that often impact significant events and connectivity in the picturesque, yet geographically demanding, region.
