Sikkim: In a significant recognition of their exceptional talent, Sikkim’s renowned singer Dr. Manoj Rai and celebrated dancer Mingma D. Lepcha have been selected for the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
The award, which honours outstanding young talent in music, dance, and drama, will be conferred upon the duo at a ceremony in New Delhi on November 22. Dr. Rai, known for his soulful and expressive renditions, and Lepcha, who has gained acclaim for her expertise in traditional dance forms, have both made substantial contributions to Sikkim’s vibrant cultural scene.
Instituted in 2006, the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is awarded annually to individuals under the age of 40 who have demonstrated exceptional skills in their respective fields. Each year, the Akademi selects up to 33 artists across five categories: music, dance, theatre, folk and tribal arts, and scholarly contributions to the performing arts. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and artistic excellence of both Dr. Rai and Mingma D. Lepcha, who continue to inspire with their craft.
