Sikkim’s Four-Time Olympian Tarundeep Rai to Compete at National Games

Gangtok: Sikkim-based archer and four-time Olympian Tarundeep Rai is set to represent his home state for the first time at the 38th National Games, which will be held in Uttarakhand from January 28 to February 14.

Rai, a celebrated name in Indian archery, is part of Sikkim’s 41-member contingent participating in five disciplines: archery, boxing, athletics, cycling, and women’s football.

At a press conference, Jaslal Pradhan, general secretary of the Sikkim Olympic Association (SOA), expressed high hopes for the team. “Four-time Olympian Tarundeep Rai is representing Sikkim in the archery competition. We are optimistic he will bring laurels to the state. We also expect medals in the other four disciplines,” Pradhan stated.

Rai will compete in the archery events scheduled from February 1 to 7, where he is the sole representative of his state.

In addition to Rai, Sikkim’s contingent includes three boxers, two cyclists, and two athletes, all aiming to make their mark in their respective categories.

The largest representation comes from the women’s football team, which comprises 22 players and four officials.

This marks the first time Sikkim’s women’s football team will compete at the National Games, following their remarkable performances in 2024.

Historically, Sikkim has achieved gold medals in karate and taekwondo; however, these disciplines are no longer included in the National Games.

The state now looks to its current contingent, with hopes pinned on experienced athletes like Tarundeep Rai, to add to its legacy of sporting excellence.
