Sikkim’s ‘Friday Field/Farm Day’ Initiative Revives Barren Lands for Cultivation

Gangtok: Sikkim’s ‘Friday Field/Farm Day – Mission Revival of Barren Land for Cultivation’ has reached a major milestone, entering its 24th week with tangible progress in transforming unproductive lands into fertile agricultural fields.

Spearheaded by the Office of the Additional District Collector (Development) of Pakyong district, the initiative is driving sustainable farming practices while revitalizing agricultural productivity across the region.

Under this ambitious mission, barren lands across all 28 Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs) have been prepared for maize cultivation, marking the onset of the Kharif crop season. By maximizing land utilization, the initiative is ensuring that previously neglected farmlands now contribute to the district’s food security and economic growth.

Beyond land preparation, the programme is equipping farmers and agricultural workers with hands-on training in cultivating diverse crops and vegetables, fostering bio-dynamic farming techniques and environmentally friendly practices.

By integrating sustainable agriculture, the mission is paving the way for long-term soil conservation and eco-conscious farming methods.

The initiative has garnered commendation from Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, whose recognition and encouragement have bolstered enthusiasm among Panchayats, government employees, and officials. His active support has played a key role in mobilizing collaborative efforts across various departments, ensuring the mission’s continued success.

Looking ahead, the mission aims to further strengthen agricultural practices, boost crop yields, and promote sustainable land use. With collective efforts from farmers, local authorities, and government bodies, Sikkim’s agricultural landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, promising greater food security and economic upliftment for rural communities.
