Sikkim’s Khecheopalri Lake Designated as Ramsar Wetland of International Importance

Gangtok: Sikkim’s Khecheopalri Lake, located in Gyalshing district, has officially been designated as a ‘Ramsar Wetland of International Importance,’ a significant environmental achievement announced by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.

This declaration coincided with World Wetlands Day, marking a milestone in the state’s conservation efforts.

Expressing his joy over the recognition, CM Tamang described Khecheopalri Lake as a breathtaking natural wonder, renowned for its crystal-clear waters, diverse biodiversity, and spiritual significance.

He highlighted that this Ramsar status not only enhances the lake’s global visibility but also reinforces Sikkim’s commitment to preserving its ecological and cultural heritage.

With this prestigious designation, Khecheopalri Lake will now receive international attention, leading to improved conservation practices and sustainable management.

The recognition also underscores the crucial role that wetlands play in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity.

CM Tamang urged the people of Sikkim to unite in their efforts to protect the lake, emphasizing that this achievement marks the beginning of renewed conservation efforts.

He called on everyone to work together to safeguard Khecheopalri Lake for the benefit of future generations.
