Sikkim’s Mazitar Faces Unprecedented Heatwave, Sparks Climate Concerns
Northeast Desk, 26th September: In an unusual turn of weather, the town of Mazitar in Sikkim experienced an unprecedented heatwave on September 25, with temperatures soaring to 34°C. The spike, highly unusual for this typically cool Himalayan region, has raised alarms among meteorologists and locals, sparking concerns over shifting climate patterns in the area.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that such extreme heat is rare for Sikkim, where moderate and cooler temperatures usually prevail. While Mazitar recorded the highest temperature, other areas of the state also saw above-average heat. Gyalsing reported a peak of 30.2°C, significantly higher than its usual range.
In contrast, the state capital Gangtok experienced more moderate conditions with a high of 20.5°C and a low of 17.3°C. The sudden heatwave has led experts to speculate on the broader implications of climate change in the Himalayan region, with more extreme weather events becoming a concern for the local environment and communities.
Officials and weather experts are closely monitoring the situation to assess potential long-term effects on Sikkim’s climate.
