Sikkim’s New Horizon: Soreng and Yangang Steal the Show at TTF Kolkata

Gangtok: Sikkim Tourism has made an indelible mark at this year’s Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF) Kolkata, captivating audiences with the grand unveiling of two promising new destinations: Soreng and Yangang. This strategic launch signals a significant leap by the Himalayan state to diversify its tourism offerings and solidify its commitment to sustainable, community-led travel experiences.

The ambitious initiative, bolstered by the steadfast support of the Tourism Department, Government of Sikkim, and the World Bank-backed Sikkim Inspires (Integrated Service Provision and Innovation for Reviving Economies) programme, underscored tourism’s pivotal role in enriching local livelihoods, particularly for women and youth. The Soreng Tourism Development Association (STDA) and Yangang Tourism Development Committee (YTDC) were central to promoting these emerging hotspots. The YTDC’s “Visit Yangang” campaign garnered particular acclaim, highlighting the town’s modern allure, including its newly launched ropeway and an anticipated skywalk.

Through captivating cinematic showcases, Soreng was introduced as a haven for authentic rural adventures, while Yangang emerged as a vibrant, burgeoning destination. These locales, previously off the beaten path, are now being strategically positioned as ideal retreats for those seeking immersive and eco-conscious Himalayan journeys.

The launch event drew a distinguished assembly of dignitaries, including Smt. Rajkumari Thapa, MLA and Deputy Speaker; Mr. Aditya Golay, MLA Soreng-Chakung; Sudesh Kumar Subba, MLA Maneybung Dentam and Advisor, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department; Shri Bikash Basnet, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister; and Shri Karma Subba, Officer on Special Duty to the Chief Minister.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. Rajkumari Thapa remarked, “Yangang possesses the true potential to be a remarkable gateway to Sikkim tourism. While the ropeway and forthcoming skywalk are exciting additions, it is the prospect of immersive, slow travel experiences that truly distinguishes us.” Mr. Aditya Golay echoed this sentiment, adding, “Soreng offers a perfect canvas for rural tourism. With focused branding and promotion, we can empower our local communities while sharing their unique narratives with the world. As a newly established district, Soreng holds immense untapped potential.”

Both leaders credited the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for Sikkim’s remarkable progress in tourism, citing his emphasis on youth engagement, community development, and tourism diversification. “We are indeed fortunate to have a forward-thinking leader like CM P.S. Golay. His dynamic leadership has paved the way for innovative tourism initiatives,” stated Thapa. The presence of Shri Bikash Basnet further underscored the state’s unwavering political commitment to fostering sustainable tourism. “Sikkim’s robust presence here is a significant milestone. It reaffirms our dedication to responsible growth,” he affirmed.

The event, adeptly hosted by community tourism strategist Robin Basnet, also featured an insightful panel discussion on the burgeoning trend of rural tourism and the paramount importance of slow travel. Experts delved into crucial aspects such as effective marketing strategies, essential infrastructural development, and the delicate balance of preserving authenticity amidst the march of modernisation.
